amalfi

We are glad to introduce you the magic Amalfi Coast towns mainly spotted along the road connecting the Gulf of Salerno to that of Naples...

Starting from Salerno we first meet Vietri sul Mare, thus starting our virtual drive along the whole Amalfi Coast to finally reach Sorrento. In Vietri sul Mare there is ceramic-art wherever you turn, including the dome of the Church of Saint John Baptist ; Its inhabitants proudly call it “The First Pearl of the Amalfi Coast” and together with its hamlet (frazione) Raito , located on a hillside under the Lattari Mountains, it offers a really suggestive image of this Italian coast, seen from the autoway when you arrive to Salerno from the North.

Cetara is a fishing town and borders with Vietri sul Mare and Maiori. This town is famous for tuna and anchovy fishing. Its name take origins probably from the Latin word Cetaria meaning 'tonnara' in Italian, that is mazes of nets used for tuna fishing, with a special technique.

Maiori and Minori are both elegant towns with popular beach areas;

Maiori, probably of Etruscan origin, was one of the most flourishing villages of the Coast during the ascent of the Republic of Amalfi, thanks to its fleet and its large port. Today the town is a thriving tourist center, endowed with hotels of a high standard and able to offer its guests everything needed to enjoy a relaxing holiday on the Amalfi Coast.

Minori is a charming coastal village less than six kilometers far from Amalfi. Its name derives from the ancient Latin name "Rheginna Minor", which in turn derived from the Rheginna River, which still flows through the valley of this area. Worth to visit in Minori are the Roman Pompeian villa, the Basilica of St. Trofimena, and the churches of Santa Lucia, San Gennaro and San Michele.

At few 700 meters from the most famous Amalfi, we meet Atrani, a village which still preserves its old character of small fishing village. Atrani, squeezed between high rock wall and the sea, at the mouth of the Valley of the Dragons, offers the tourists a fantastic setting, which perhaps is reflected in the etymology of its name:"Atranum dictum est ab oscuro". In a typically medieval urban structure and the today town develops around the churches of Santa Maddalena, San Salvatore, San Michele, Santa Rosalia, Santa Maria del Bando.

The origin of Amalfi is not a certain one. The name comes from Latina (from Melfi, a Lucan sea village abandoned by Roman people in IV century a.C. or maybe from Roman gens Amarfia, that lived in I century a.C.). A legend tells that the name comes from Amalfi, a nymph loved by Hercules.... read more.

Praiano is a small fishing town. Formerly known as Pelagium (which means "open sea"), it differs from other coastal towns by its vast open sea location and for its rocky coast towards Positano. Praiano has always been loved by tourists, since the times of the Sea Republics. In that period the doges of Amalfi chose Praiano as their summer residence.... read more.

Positano - a picturesque perfect coastline town. Positano is called the pearl of the Amalfi Coast.
Its landscapes are famous all over the world: its white houses clinging to the hillside overlooking the sea coming up to lap the beach, the views of Positano, its distinctive architecture composed of narrow alleys, arcades, passageways, staircases, its shops with its famous Positano fashion 'Moda Positano' and, finally, its beautiful beaches..... all this make this town a tourist destination not to be missed.

Ravello - Thanks to the Ravello International Music Festival (Festival Internazionale di Musica di Ravello), Ravello has become famous all over the world. Ravello is a very quiet and chic town and from the terraces of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone, visitors can admire a wonderful panorama that once enchanted Richard Wagner and the great Greta Garbo... read more.

Scala, a town with a majestic view. Scala is a mountain centre at the feet of Lattari mountains: it looks towards Valle del Dragone at 360 m above the sea-level. It is the most ancient town of Amalfitana Coast. It is a small but nice town surrounded by chestnut groves and small oak woods, near Ravello.

Tramonti is situated between two mountains and in the past it was part of Repubblica Marinara of Amalfi. It's a windy place and that's why Flavio Gioia, the inventor of the wind rose, called the rigid wind coming from the north "tramontana".

Furore is a very small town of about 850 people built along a winding road. It is located between Amalfi and Positano, overlooking the hills of Praiano, and near Agerola a little more inland.The ancient name of Furore was Terra Furoris because during the stormy nights the noise of the sea was actually very loud. Furore is a very small town situated in the homonymous fiord. It develops on the beach and along the slopes of Lattari Mountains.
